Best Sofa for Back Pain: Seat Height, Depth and Support
The best sofa for back pain starts with your knee height. Five sofas compared on published seat height, seat depth, back height and firmness, with prices.

For a sore back, look for a sofa with a seat high enough to stand up from easily and shallow enough that you can sit all the way back with your feet flat on the floor. Of the sofas below, the La-Z-Boy Greyson publishes the highest and shallowest seat, 21 inches high and 21.5 inches deep, with a power headrest and power lumbar. The Article Anton loveseat, at 18 inches high and 23 inches deep for $899 on article.com as of September 2026, is the pick under $1,000.
Before you compare them, take two measurements of yourself. Sit on a firm dining chair with your feet flat and measure from the floor to the crease behind your knee; that is your knee height. Then measure from the back of your hips to that same crease; that is roughly the seat depth your thighs can use. Every seat height and seat depth below is worth holding against those two numbers, in inches, before you hold it against a price.
I have had back pain since I was 18, and on any sofa the moment I notice most is the end of the evening, when I have to get up. That is why I read seat height before anything else on a listing, and seat depth right after it.

Key Takeaways
Measure your knee height first
Floor to the crease behind your knee, seated. Compare every published seat height with it.
Lower seats are harder to rise from
A sit-to-stand study found hip and knee loads increased as the chair seat got lower.
Seat depth decides whether your feet reach the floor
Mayo Clinic's seating advice starts with feet flat on the floor, or a footrest.
The published seats here run 15.75 to 21 inches high
Seat depth runs 21.5 to 27.56 inches across the same sofas.
Firmness and foam density are separate numbers
The Polyurethane Foam Association measures them differently and says one does not set the other.
Words like orthopedic carry no measurement
Judge a listing on seat height, depth, back height and firmness instead.
How these were judged
Every sofa here was read on its maker's own listing for four numbers: seat height, seat depth, back height and a firmness rating on the maker's own scale. Arm height counts too, because an arm is what you push against to stand. A sofa earned a place by publishing enough of those figures to be compared, and none earned one for the words "orthopedic", "ergonomic" or "back support", which on their own give you nothing to measure.
Seat height leads because of what the research on standing up shows. A peer-reviewed study of sit-to-stand movement calls chair seat height "one of the most important determinants" of the task, and found that the mechanical load on the hips and knees rose as the seat got lower. A second study, by Demura and Yamada, found that force and quickness when standing dropped once chair height differed from lower-leg length by 20 percent, which in their measurements was 6.2 centimeters, about 2.4 inches, with bigger gaps making it worse. Both studies used chairs rather than cushioned sofas, and neither names a sofa height that suits everyone. What they support is the check above: compare the seat with your own knee height, and treat a seat well below it as one to try in person first.
Seat depth and the back come from Mayo Clinic's office ergonomics advice: "Choose a chair that supports your spine," with your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest so your thighs sit parallel to it, and armrests that let your elbows stay close to your body with relaxed shoulders. That was written for desk chairs, so it gives you a fit test rather than a sofa number, and it is the test to run in a store. The same page adds that sitting in one position for hours "isn't good for your body," which applies just as well to a long film.
The two national back pain pages are shorter on seating. The NHS back pain page says to "stay active and try to continue with your daily activities" and does not discuss sofas or chairs at all. The American Physical Therapy Association's ChoosePT guide to low back pain lists "training on proper lifting, bending, and sitting" among what a physical therapist provides, along with body positioning at home and during leisure. If sitting or standing up is part of your pain, that training is something a physical therapist can give you in person.

Best for adjustable lumbar and headrest: La-Z-Boy Greyson Power Reclining Sofa with Headrest and Lumbar
The Greyson has the highest seat and the shallowest one of any sofa here: 21 inches from the floor and 21.5 inches deep. La-Z-Boy lists it as a tall-scale style, sized for people from 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 2 inches, which is worth knowing before a shorter person orders it, since a 21-inch seat can leave shorter legs short of the floor. Its headrest and lumbar are both power-adjusted, so the support behind you moves to where you want it instead of being wherever a loose pillow happens to settle.
It is also the most expensive sofa in the set: $4,829 on la-z-boy.com as of September 2026, a sale price against an original $6,899. The listing does not publish arm height, back height, cushion fill or foam density, so ask the store for the arm height and which cushion type the seats use. That second question matters for the warranty, covered further down.
La-Z-Boy's Dutton Power Reclining Sofa with Headrest and Lumbar is the close sibling if the Greyson's seat is too tall for you. Its listing publishes a 20.5-inch seat height, a 22.5-inch seat depth and a 25.5-inch arm height, with reclining legrests, adjustable headrests and lumbar, at $4,409 as of September 2026, again a sale price against $6,299.
Best fixed sofa for a higher seat: Room & Board Robin 91-inch Two-Cushion Sofa
If you do not want a motor, the Robin has the highest seat among the fixed sofas here at 20 inches, with a 23-inch seat depth and a 25-inch arm height. Room & Board publishes what is inside the seat: a spring and down cushion with high-resiliency, CertiPUR-US certified foam, under back cushions in a fiber down blend.
Room & Board does not publish a foam density or a firmness rating for the Robin, so sit on it if you can, or ask how far the seat compresses under an adult. It costs $2,699 on roomandboard.com as of September 2026, and the listing's shopping promise includes free returns; ask for the return window in writing before you order, since the product page does not give one.
Best for a similar seat at a lower price: Room & Board Vienna 90-inch Sofa
The Vienna sits an inch lower than the Robin, at a 19-inch seat height, with the same 23-inch seat depth and a slightly taller 26-inch arm. Overall it measures 90 inches wide, 35 deep and 32 high. At $1,899 on roomandboard.com as of September 2026, it costs $800 less than the Robin for a seat that differs by one inch in height.
The listing does not publish the seat fill, foam density or back height, so those are the three things to ask Room & Board before ordering. If your knee height is close to 19 inches or below it, the Vienna is the more sensible of the two Room & Board seats; if you are taller, or if getting up is the hardest part of your evening, the extra inch on the Robin is the reason to pay more.
Best under $1,000: Article Anton 74-inch Loveseat, Limestone
The Anton loveseat publishes an 18-inch seat height, a 23-inch seat depth and a 27-inch arm height, the tallest arm in the set, which gives you more to push against as you stand. It is also the only sofa here whose maker publishes foam density in pounds per cubic foot: the seat is high-resiliency foam with polyester at 2.27 PCF, under a fiber down blend back.
That density figure tells you about durability rather than feel. The Polyurethane Foam Association explains that density, the weight of a cubic foot of foam, affects how long a cushion keeps its original support, while firmness is a separate measurement taken by pressing the foam down by 25 percent. A 2.27 PCF seat can still be soft or firm; the number says it was made to last, and a store sit tells you the rest.
At 74 inches wide it seats two, and it costs $899 on article.com as of September 2026. Article publishes a 30-day return policy on all orders and free exchanges within 30 days of delivery. The returns page does not give a single return cost for every sofa, so ask what sending the Anton back would cost before you rely on the trial.
Best published firmness and back height: West Elm Haven Sofa
The Haven is the only sofa here that publishes all four of the numbers this list is judged on. Its seat is 18 inches high and 25 inches deep, the back is 24 inches high, the arm is 24 inches, and West Elm rates the seat soft, 2 on its own scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is firmest. The seat is down-alternative-wrapped, high-resiliency polyurethane foam, and it costs $1,899 on westelm.com as of September 2026.
Two of those numbers are worth checking against your own measurements before you order. A 25-inch seat depth is 2 inches deeper than the Room & Board and Article seats, so check it against your hip-to-knee measurement; if the seat is deeper than your thigh, you will either perch forward or need a firm cushion behind you to sit back with your feet down. And a 2 out of 5 is a soft seat by West Elm's own reckoning. The scale only sorts West Elm's own range, where the best loveseat picks run from 1 to 4, so it tells you where the Haven sits among West Elm seats and nothing about other brands.
West Elm's Harmony Extra Deep is worth knowing about for its support pillows: its listing includes loose lumbar pillows on every size except petite. It is rated soft, 1 of 5, the softest on West Elm's scale, and its print listing does not give a seat height, seat depth or price, so ask West Elm for those three before comparing it with the sofas above.

If someone in your home wants a low, deep seat
A shared sofa can pull two ways when one person wants to sink in and put their feet up and the other needs to sit upright and stand without effort. In one Reddit thread on deep sofas, an owner describes a deep sofa making lower back pain worse, and another back pain forum post describes a seat too soft and too deep to keep the feet on the floor. Those are single accounts, but they match Mayo Clinic's feet-on-the-floor test.
Monvane's sofas sit at the low, deep end of the range, which suits the lounger. Monvane's Cushioned Modular Sofa listing, for the four-seat L-shaped corduroy version, publishes a 15.75-inch seat height and a 26-inch seat depth at $499.99 on monvane.com as of September 2026. The Convertible Loveseat listing gives the same 15.75 inches high and 26 deep, and the two-seater Loveseat Sofa listing gives 16.5 inches high and 27.56 deep at $329.99. For comparison, the other sofas here run 18 to 21 inches high and 21.5 to 25 inches deep.
On a sofa like that, a firm back cushion can take in some of the depth, but the seat height is much harder to change. So, measure your knee height against 15.75 inches before ordering one for anyone who finds standing hard. Both loveseats list high-density "30D" foam; ask Monvane what that is in pounds per cubic foot so you can compare it with the Anton's 2.27. For more low, deep options judged on their published depth, see the best deep-seat sofa guide.

Checks to run on any listing before you buy
Find out how the seat was measured. A seat height is normally taken from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. Black Dog Upholstery's measurement guide defines seat depth as running "from the front edge of the seat to the back, where the cushion meets the back," and arm height from the seat rather than the floor. Listings do not all follow that, and several of the arm heights above are plainly from the floor, since they are only 5 to 9 inches above the seat heights. If a figure matters to you, ask the seller what it was measured from.
Ask how far the seat sinks. A published seat height is the empty cushion. No maker in this set publishes how much the seat compresses under a person, and the foam association's firmness test is a lab measurement rather than a prediction for a finished sofa, so a store sit or a seller's answer is the only way to know. A shopper on MoneySavingExpert's forum found the delivered sofa sank much further than the one tried in the shop, so if you can, sit on the exact cushion option you are ordering.
Ask about recovery as well as firmness. The foam association notes that good hysteresis, the way foam pushes back after you have compressed it, helps with getting out of furniture built for deep sitting. That is a question for the seller's foam specification, and it pairs with density, which predicts how long the support lasts. The sagging cushion guide covers what to do when a seat you already own has lost it.
Check the back cushions as well as the seat. In a store, sit back fully for a few minutes and notice whether your lower back is still touching something. A loose lumbar pillow, like the ones West Elm includes with the Harmony, can fill a gap behind you, but it cannot make a seat shallower by more than its own thickness.
Raising a low sofa. Furniture risers can lift a sofa that is too low. If you try them, check that each leg sits fully in its riser and the floor is level before anyone sits down.
Returns and warranties that matter for a sore back
Because a sofa for a sore back is best judged after a few evenings at home, the return window matters as much as the price. Article publishes the clearest terms in this set: a 30-day return policy and free exchanges within 30 days of delivery. Room & Board's listings mention free returns without stating the window, so ask for it. The Monvane listings named here do not state a trial period or return cost, so ask Monvane before ordering.
Cushion coverage is the part of a warranty that speaks to lost support, and La-Z-Boy's warranty page sets cushion coverage by cushion type: one year for standard polyurethane foam, three years for ComfortCore and for Contour Cushions, and five years for ComfortDown. So, ask which cushion type your Greyson or Dutton will have, because that answer sets whether the cushion coverage runs one, three or five years. None of the makers here gives a sag depth in inches that qualifies for a claim, so ask the seller how they judge one.
Check your numbers
1. Your knee height is 17 inches. Which published seat is closest to it?
2. A listing says "orthopedic support" and publishes no seat depth. What should you ask for?
3. The Anton publishes a foam density of 2.27 PCF. What does that number mainly tell you?
4. Which sofa here publishes all four numbers: seat height, depth, back height and a firmness rating?
Pick an answer to begin.
Frequently asked questions
What seat height is best for getting up with back pain?
No medical source gives one sofa height for everyone. A sit-to-stand study found hip and knee loads rose as chair seats got lower, and Demura and Yamada found standing got harder once seat height differed from lower-leg length by about 20 percent. Compare each published seat height with your own knee height, and try seats well below it in person.
How deep should a sofa seat be for a bad back?
Deep enough for your thighs and shallow enough that you can sit back with your feet flat, which is the fit Mayo Clinic describes for chairs. Measure from the back of your hips to the crease behind your knee and compare it with the listing. The seats here run from 21.5 inches on the La-Z-Boy Greyson to 27.56 inches on the Monvane two-seater.
Is a firm or soft sofa better for back pain?
Judge firmness by sitting on the sofa, or by checking the return window before you buy. Firmness and foam density are separate measurements, so a dense seat can still feel soft. Where a maker rates firmness, as West Elm does on a 1 to 5 scale, the rating only compares that maker's own sofas.
Does lumbar support on a sofa help?
Mayo Clinic's advice is to choose a seat that supports your spine, written for office chairs rather than sofas. On a sofa, support can come from a power lumbar like the Greyson's, from loose lumbar pillows like the Harmony's, or from a seat shallow enough that the back cushion reaches you. Sit back fully in a store and check that your lower back is touching the sofa.
