Best Sofa Slipcovers, and How to Size One to Your Sofa

The best sofa slipcovers for a sofa you are keeping, from stretch covers to custom fits, with published size ranges, care lines and what each fit costs.

By Cal Hewitt,

If your sofa is a standard three-seater between 74 and 96 inches across the outside of the arms, a ready-made Sure Fit cover is sized for it: the relaxed Soft Suede if you want a draped, upholstered look, or the Stretch Plush if you want the cover to hug the frame. If your sofa is an IKEA Ektorp, Bemz makes a nine-piece cover cut for that one model. If it is an odd length or shape, Comfort Works will make a cover from your own photos and measurements, starting at US$789 for a three-seat sofa up to 95 inches as of September 2026. Before any of that, get a tape measure and write down one number: the width from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other.

At a glance

Key Takeaways

Start with the outside-arm width

Sure Fit sizes its sofa covers by the straight line from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, and publishes a 74 to 96 inch range for both covers here.

Closer fit costs more and takes longer

A stretch or relaxed cover ships ready-made. Comfort Works quotes four to five weeks for a custom cover, starting at US$789 for a three-seat sofa up to 95 inches.

A model-specific cover fits one sofa

Bemz's Ektorp cover is cut for the IKEA Ektorp three-seat and nothing else, and it excludes the leather version.

Loose cushions look best with their own covers

Bemz's Ektorp set has separate covers for each of the three seat and three back cushions, plus the arms and frame.

Check the drying line before you buy

Good Housekeeping reports the PureFit cover must be line-dried, and its Textiles Lab found cotton covers shrank more than synthetic ones.

Some shapes are hard to cover at any price

Comfort Works will not make covers for recliners, Victorian pieces, camelbacks with uneven seat depths, or kidney and scooped-back sofas.

How these were judged

Each cover here was judged on what its seller states about fit: a width range in inches, or the named sofa model it was cut for. After fit came the piece count, because a sofa with loose cushions looks finished only when each cushion has its own cover; then the fabric and the care line, since a slipcover on a lived-in sofa gets washed; and then the cost and the terms if the cover does not fit.

Fit comes first because it decides whether the covered sofa looks upholstered, and no fabric or price makes up for a cover sized for a different sofa. Good Housekeeping's Brigitt Earley puts the same check first in her roundup of couch covers: "make sure to take a close look at the dimensions prior to purchasing."

These are covers for appearance and everyday wear on a sofa you are keeping. If the job is keeping dog hair and claws off the cushions, the dog couch cover guide covers the covers built for that, and if the job is stopping liquid, the waterproof couch covers are sorted by what the barrier is made of.

Best relaxed fit for a standard sofa: Sure Fit Soft Suede Sofa Slipcover

Sure Fit's Soft Suede cover is the one to look at first if your sofa falls in the common range and you want it to read as upholstered rather than wrapped. Its Target listing gives a fit of 74 to 96 inches measured outside arm to outside arm, straight across, and 36 to 40 inches tall. It is a relaxed, non-stretch cover, so it drapes over the frame the way a loose-covered sofa does rather than pulling tight over every curve.

That published range is what makes it an easy recommendation. Stand at the front of your sofa, measure straight across from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, and if the number lands between 74 and 96 you know the cover was cut with your sofa in mind. Check the back height too, since the stated range runs from 36 to 40 inches from the floor to the top of the back.

What to confirm on the listing before you order: the fabric content, the piece count, the care instructions and the return terms for a cover that does not fit. The Target listing gives the size range clearly, so ask the seller for the rest or read the label section of the current listing. A relaxed cover like this suits a sofa with fairly simple lines; a deeply shaped or unusual sofa will show the extra fabric more.

A stretch knit follows the shape underneath, so the sofa's own edges show through.

Best stretch fit in the same size range: Sure Fit Stretch Plush Sofa Slipcover

If you want the cover to follow your sofa's shape more closely, the Stretch Plush is Sure Fit's answer in the same size band. Bed Bath and Beyond lists it for sofas 74 to 96 inches wide, outside arm to outside arm, so the measuring step is identical to the Soft Suede.

The choice between the two Sure Fit covers comes down to the look you want. A stretch fabric pulls against the frame and shows the sofa's outline, which suits a sofa with clean arms and a fairly flat back. A relaxed cover hides more of the shape underneath. Good Housekeeping notes that synthetic fabrics are generally more form-fitting than woven cotton, so check the fiber content on the listing to see what you are getting.

A Reddit owner in r/BuyItForLife reported that a SureFit stretch pinstripe cover had held up acceptably for about three years. That is one person's account of a different Sure Fit pattern, but it is a real length of ownership. As with the Soft Suede, confirm the fiber content, piece count and care line on the current listing before ordering.

Best stretch cover for firm, even cushions: Maytex Pixel Ultra Soft Stretch Sofa Slipcover

The Maytex Pixel is Good Housekeeping's best overall pick among couch covers, and it is the one-piece stretch cover to consider if you want the whole sofa covered in a single pull. Good Housekeeping describes it as a polyester blend that laundered well, and it quotes an owner who said the cover stayed on without "bunching or crumpling up." That is an owner's report relayed by the magazine rather than a lab result, but it speaks to the most common complaint about stretch covers.

The Maytex is sold on Amazon in multiple sizes. Before you pick a size, open the size chart on the listing and find the inch range that includes your outside-arm measurement; a size name like "sofa" or "large sofa" only helps once you know the inches behind it. Check the fiber percentages at the same time, since the share of spandex is what lets a stretch cover recover its shape after someone sits down.

I would put this one on a sofa with even, firm cushions. A Reddit owner with an 88-inch sofa found that a stretch cover's seat section worked but the whole cover would not hold, because the seat cushions were too thick for it. Thick or overstuffed cushions are a reason to look at a multi-piece cover instead.

Best for an IKEA Ektorp: Bemz Ektorp 3 Seater Sofa Cover, Loose Fit Recycled Velvet

If you own an IKEA Ektorp three-seat sofa, a model-specific cover is the closest thing to new upholstery without a trip to an upholsterer. The Bemz Ektorp cover comes as nine pieces: one frame cover, three seat-cushion covers, three back-cushion covers and two armrest covers. Each cushion gets its own cover, so the cushions sit and move the way they did on the original sofa.

Bemz sizes it by the model rather than by a range. The listing gives the Ektorp three-seat as 215 cm wide, which is about 84.6 inches, with a height and depth of 88 cm, about 34.6 inches. The cover fits only that sofa, and Bemz excludes the leather version of the Ektorp. The listing states the cover is machine washable, is made to order in Europe, and carries a three-year guarantee.

The price on the listing appeared in Swedish kronor, so check the Bemz US storefront for the dollar price and the shipping time before you commit. Bemz also sells covers for other IKEA models, including discontinued ones, and a one-piece Universal 3 Seater Sofa Cover designed for sofas with a classic rounded shape; for that one, ask for the inch range it fits before ordering.

Best for an unlisted sofa up to 95 inches: Comfort Works custom three-seat slipcover

When your sofa is not a standard size, has cushions that stretch covers cannot manage, or is a model no one cuts covers for, a made-to-measure cover is the rung that solves it. Comfort Works makes covers for a list of named sofa models, including IKEA sofas, and will also make one for a sofa that is not on the list through its custom slipcover process. You send photographs and measurements of the arms, seat base and cushions, and Comfort Works reviews the measurements before it starts production.

Its pricing page gives a starting price of US$789 for a three-seat sofa up to 95 inches wide, covering the fabric and the work for the frame, seat and back cushion covers, with some basic customization, as of September 2026. The custom service page itself showed a starting figure of $899, so ask for a written quote on your sofa; Comfort Works says a quote normally takes one to two working days. For a sofa already on its list, the Floyd sofa cover page showed a three-seat, sofa-bed or grande cover in Everyday Weave Cream from US$522. Production generally takes four to five weeks, and complex items can take longer.

If the finished cover does not fit, Comfort Works asks you to contact it within 60 days with details and photos, and says it will look at repair or replacement. Under its 60-day guarantee, a significant fit problem can lead to a free replacement after troubleshooting and fresh measurements, while a cover ordered for the wrong model may get store credit worth 50 percent of the original slipcover value, excluding shipping. So, measure twice and name the model carefully.

Comfort Works will not make covers for recliner sofas and chairs, Victorian-style pieces, camelback sofas with uneven seat depths, or kidney and scooped-back sofas. If your sofa reclines, look for a cover cut for reclining seats, which is sized by seat width instead.

How to measure your sofa for a slipcover

The number every ready-made cover is sized by is the width, and the sellers here measure it the same way. Sure Fit's listing specifies outside arm to outside arm, straight across. Comfort Works measures width "between the two furthest points of the sofa, usually from arm to arm." In practice:

1. Stand in front of the sofa and run the tape straight across from the outside edge of one arm to the outside edge of the other, at the widest point. Write it down in inches. 2. Measure the height from the floor to the top of the back, since Sure Fit's Soft Suede states a 36 to 40 inch range. 3. Count the seat cushions and the back cushions, and note whether they are loose or attached. 4. Look at the arms from the front and note their shape: rolled, square, flared or something unusual. 5. If you are ordering a model-specific cover, find the model name on the original tag or receipt, because Bemz and Comfort Works both work from the named model.

For a custom order, Comfort Works breaks the sofa into sections, including the armrests, the seat base and each cushion, and gives its own form for the measurements. Follow that form rather than a general guide, since it is what the cover will be cut from.

A close view at arm height from a front three-quarter angle of a stretch slipcover fitted over a sofa's wide rolled arm, the pale oatmeal fabric following the scroll of the arm front smoothly and gathering neatly beneath its curve, framed so the arm's shape and the cover's fit to it fill the picture
Wide rolled arms are where a one-size cover pulls or bunches first, so check the arm style before you order.

Loose cushions, thick cushions and arm shape

Cushions decide how finished a covered sofa looks more than any other feature. A one-piece cover goes over everything at once, which is quick to fit and simple to wash, but it cannot follow the gaps between loose cushions. Good Housekeeping says two- and three-piece covers conform better to cushions than one-piece covers. At the far end, Bemz's Ektorp set gives every cushion its own cover.

If your cushions are thick or overstuffed, lean toward a multi-piece cover or a separate cushion cover rather than one stretch piece, for the reason the 88-inch sofa owner found. Good Housekeeping describes the PureFit Super Stretch Sectional Couch Cover as a multi-piece design with non-skid elastic bottoms and foam anchors, which is the ready-made route for a sectional.

Arm shape is harder to plan for, because few ready-made listings state which arm styles they fit. The Sure Fit Target listing gives the width and height range but no arm limit. So, if your sofa has large rolled or flared arms, ask the seller whether the cover fits that arm shape, or send a photo, before you order. If they cannot say, a custom maker that works from photographs is the safer route.

Keeping the cover in place

Fitted covers hold on with elastic hems, loops along the bottom edge, and foam strips or anchors pushed into the gap between the seat and the back. Good Housekeeping describes the PrinceDeco cover as one piece with thick elastic loops along the bottom, and the Easy-Going stretch cover as snug thanks to anti-slip foam strips on the seat and elastic around the bottom, though it also found the Easy-Going fabric very thin and lightweight.

What keeps a cover still under daily use gets a fuller treatment in the dog couch cover guide linked above, and if pets are the reason you are covering the sofa at all, the furniture protectors for pets are sorted by the part of the sofa they reach.

Fabric, washing and shrinkage

The fabric decides both how the cover looks on your sofa and how it comes out of the wash. The stretch covers Good Housekeeping describes, including PrinceDeco, Easy-Going and PureFit, are polyester and spandex blends, sometimes in a jacquard weave with a texture that hides small wrinkles, as on the PrinceDeco cover, or a stretch velvet with a softer surface, as on the ULTICOR 7-piece sectional cover Good Housekeeping describes. Woven cotton, such as duck or twill, stretches far less, and Good Housekeeping says it can become baggier on the sofa.

Shrinkage is the thing to plan for. Good Housekeeping's Textiles Lab found cotton covers shrank more than synthetic covers, sometimes enough to change the fit after laundering. Comfort Works says natural fabrics may shrink slightly in the wash even when pre-shrunk. A cover cut close to your sofa has less room to lose, so follow the care label to the letter.

The care lines vary. Bemz states the Ektorp cover is machine washable. Good Housekeeping reports the PureFit cover is machine washable but must be line-dried. For every other cover, read the care label on the listing before you buy, and look for the water temperature, the dryer setting, and whether it can go in the dryer at all. A cover that must air-dry means a sofa without its cover for a day, which matters if you wash often.

For the covers here, the fabric content and the care line are the facts to compare. If you want an abrasion or pilling rating for a cover fabric, ask the seller for it by name before ordering.

Checks for any slipcover listing

Before you order a cover from any seller, find these on the listing or ask for them:

  • A width range in inches that includes your outside-arm measurement, usually in the size chart or specifications. A cover described only as universal or fitting most sofas has not given you the range.
  • The arm shape it fits, in the fit notes or the photos. If it is not stated and your arms are rolled or flared, ask.
  • Separate seat-cushion covers, in the piece count or the list of what is included, if your cushions are loose.
  • The fabric content, including the spandex share on a stretch cover, under materials or fabric information.
  • The wash and dry instructions, under care. Note whether it can be tumble dried.
  • What happens if it does not fit, under returns or the guarantee. Comfort Works publishes a 60-day fit process; for the retailer listings here, check the retailer's own return terms before ordering.

If the frame or the cushions themselves are giving out, a cover will only hide the problem for a while. How long each part of a couch lasts is worth reading before you spend on a cover for a sofa near the end of its life.

Which cover fits your sofa?

1. Your sofa measures 88 inches from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other. Which Sure Fit covers list that size?

2. You own an IKEA Ektorp three-seat in leather. Will the Bemz Ektorp cover fit?

3. Your sofa reclines. Will Comfort Works make a custom cover for it?

4. Which fabric did Good Housekeeping's Textiles Lab find shrank more in the wash?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sofa slipcover?

It depends on your sofa's size and shape. For a standard sofa 74 to 96 inches across the outside of the arms, Sure Fit's Soft Suede and Stretch Plush covers are sized for it; for an IKEA Ektorp, Bemz's nine-piece cover is cut for that model; and for an unusual sofa, Comfort Works makes covers from your measurements.

How do I keep a sofa slipcover from slipping?

Buy a cover whose width range includes your sofa, then use the elastic hem and any foam strips or anchors it comes with, pushing the anchors into the gap between the seat and the back. On a sofa with thick loose cushions, a multi-piece cover with separate cushion covers holds better than one stretch piece.

Do slipcovers stay in place?

A well-sized cover usually does. Good Housekeeping quotes an owner who said the Maytex Pixel stayed on without bunching, while a Reddit owner with thick seat cushions found a one-piece stretch cover would not hold.

Can you put a sofa slipcover in the washing machine?

Many can, but check the care line first. Bemz states its Ektorp cover is machine washable, while Good Housekeeping reports the PureFit cover must be line-dried, and cotton covers can shrink enough to change the fit.

How long does a custom slipcover take?

Comfort Works says a quote normally takes one to two working days and a custom cover generally takes four to five weeks to make. Complex pieces can take longer, so plan around that if you are covering a sofa before a move or a visit.

Outside-arm width. The straight-line measurement from the outer edge of one arm to the outer edge of the other. Ready-made sofa covers are sized by it.

Measure the outside-arm width tonight, count the cushions, and look at the arms, and the right rung of fit usually becomes clear. If you find the sofa itself is due for replacement, PlushPick has the sofas sold with washable covers of their own, which puts the next cover change in your own washer.
