For a room where two adults may sleep at once, start with the ZINUS Suzanne, a metal and bamboo daybed whose maker rates the daybed and its roll-out trundle at 350 pounds each. The seven daybeds below run across metal, wood and upholstered frames, with dated prices from $449 at IKEA to $1,995 at Pottery Barn Kids as of September 2026. Each one is judged first on the weight limit its maker gives for the top bed and for the trundle, then on the twin mattress it takes and how thick that mattress can be, and where a maker leaves a figure out, you get the question to ask before you order.

How these were judged

The first figure read for every daybed was the weight limit for each sleeping surface, top and trundle separately, because a guest sleeps on one or the other and the two are often rated differently. After that came the mattress: whether it is a standard twin, the thickest the maker recommends, and on children's models the thinnest. Then the frame and foundation, including whether it needs a box spring, the assembly and packaging, the warranty, and a dated price from the maker or a non-Amazon retailer.

The ZINUS and the DHP are sold on Amazon, so check the current price there. If you are still deciding between a daybed and a futon for the room, the futon and daybed compared on seating, sleeping and floor space is the place to settle that first.

Best for two adults on equal beds: ZINUS Suzanne Bamboo and Metal Daybed with Trundle

The Suzanne carries the highest rating here that applies equally to both beds. ZINUS's assembly manual gives 350 pounds for each twin bed, stated separately for the daybed and for the trundle, so two adult guests are each sleeping on a surface rated for them. The frame measures 78 inches long, 39 inches wide and 25.8 inches high, and both beds take a twin mattress on steel slat support with no box spring needed.

It is also the simplest to get into the house. Everything, including tools and instructions, comes in one box, and ZINUS says two people can put it together in under an hour. The warranty is five years from the manufacturer. Maria Conti included the Suzanne in HGTV's roundup of daybeds, updated in July 2025.

What ZINUS does not give is a maximum mattress thickness for either bed, and the trundle stores under the frame. Before ordering a guest mattress, ask the seller for the thickest mattress each bed will take. The Suzanne is sold on Amazon.

Best top-bed rating in metal: DHP Manila Daybed and Trundle

The DHP Manila is a twin metal daybed with a roll-out trundle, and its assembly manual rates the daybed at 400 pounds and the trundle at 225 pounds. That top figure is the highest of the metal frames here, and it makes the Manila a sound choice for a heavier adult sleeping on the daybed itself.

The trundle figure is the one to plan around. At 225 pounds it is a little over half the top rating, so it suits a child or a lighter guest, and a second adult may be better on the daybed while the lighter person takes the trundle. The manual says DHP supplies replacement parts for missing or damaged pieces.

The manual does not give overall dimensions, the thickest mattress either bed takes, the slat layout or whether a box spring is needed. Ask the seller for all four before ordering, and measure your wall against the dimensions they give you. The Manila is sold through Amazon retailers.

Best for a pull-out double on a budget: IKEA HEMNES Daybed Frame with 3 Drawers

The HEMNES is a daybed that becomes a double bed. It takes two twin mattresses, which stack as a single by day and sit side by side on the pull-out base at night, and IKEA recommends that each be no more than 5 1/2 inches thick in its daybed and bed frame guide. IKEA lists it at 42 1/8 inches wide and 32 5/8 inches high, for mattresses 74 3/8 inches long, with three drawers underneath, and it ships in four packages. The frame is engineered wood and solid pine, with a slatted base included and no midbeam needed.

It was $449 on ikea.com as of September 2026, with mattresses sold separately. Add two ÅSVANG twin mattresses at $129 each and the whole setup comes to $707, the lowest dated price in this group for a bed that sleeps two.

IKEA gives a limit of 44 pounds for each drawer, which is a drawer figure and says nothing about the bed. The listing does not give a weight limit for either sleeping surface, so if a heavier adult will sleep on it, ask IKEA customer service for the figure before you buy. Owners in one r/IKEA thread describe the stacked mattresses sliding and suggest a nonslip carpet gripper or rug pad between them, and in another some describe creaking and broken slats with daily use while others report years without a squeak. Those are individual accounts, but the gripper is cheap to try.

Best upholstered daybed with a trundle: Walker Edison Upholstered Corduroy Daybed with Trundle

The Walker Edison corduroy daybed is rated at 300 pounds on the bed and 300 pounds on the trundle, so both guests get the same figure. It measures 86 inches long, 43 inches wide and 34 inches high, with a plywood frame under corduroy upholstery, a twin mattress on top and a roll-out trundle on casters below. No box spring is required.

Its most useful number for a second guest is the trundle mattress limit: up to 8 inches thick, the thickest trundle allowance among the picks that give one. A thicker trundle mattress is the plainest way to make the lower bed comfortable for an adult.

It was $757 on walkeredison.com as of September 2026, with the mattresses not included. The one-year limited warranty covers out-of-box defects, missing parts and electrical components, against five years on the ZINUS. At 86 inches, this is also the longest frame here, so tape it on the wall first. Walker Edison describes assembly as fast; if the frame has to go up stairs, ask for the box count and weights too. It is also sold through Amazon retailers.

Best trundle rating: Pottery Barn Kids Harlow Daybed and Trundle, twin

The Harlow rates its trundle above its twin top. Pottery Barn Kids rates the twin daybed at 300 pounds and the roll-out trundle at 500 pounds, the highest trundle figure in this group, and the full-size daybed at 500 pounds as well. For a room where an adult will sleep on the trundle, that is the figure to have.

The twin frame is 42 inches wide, 78.5 inches long and 38 inches high, with a backboard 27.5 inches tall, built from solid poplar, engineered wood and MDF on a slat-roll foundation with no box spring. Pottery Barn Kids recommends a top mattress at least 9 inches tall. Under the frame there are 10 inches of clearance, the trundle stands 8 inches high, and its mattress platform sits 5 inches off the floor. Pottery Barn Kids' Lullaby Trundle Mattress is 5 inches thick, which brings the trundle bed to about 10 inches, level with the clearance, so ask Pottery Barn Kids whether it stores with that mattress in place.

It was $1,299 to $1,995 on potterybarnkids.com as of September 2026, depending on configuration, and the listing does not break out the daybed-only price from the daybed with trundle. With the $299 Lullaby trundle mattress, the frame and trundle bed come to $1,598 to $2,294 before a top mattress. In-home delivery and assembly are offered, and eligible items can be returned within 30 days, with shipping charges possibly taken from the refund. The Harlow is listed as GREENGUARD Gold and FSC certified.

Best for a child's room: Pottery Barn Kids Penny Daybed and Trundle

The Penny is the one daybed here with a published slat count, 12 slats, and it rates the twin bed and the trundle at 300 pounds each. It measures 41.5 inches wide, 79 inches long and 35 inches high, in solid radiata pine, rubberwood and MDF, on legs 6.5 inches high, with no box spring needed.

The figures that matter for a child are all on the listing. The daybed platform sits 13 inches off the floor and the side rail is 7 inches high. Pottery Barn Kids recommends a top mattress at least 9 inches tall for safety, and a trundle mattress of 6 inches or less on a platform 3.5 inches off the floor. Pottery Barn Kids says its juvenile products are tested at third-party CPSC-accredited laboratories to meet or exceed the safety requirements that apply to them.

The daybed was $1,099 to $1,199 on potterybarnkids.com as of September 2026, and a Penny trundle sold on its own was $499 to $549, so you can buy the daybed now and add the trundle when a second bed is needed.

Best sofa-style daybed for a full mattress: West Elm Lana Upholstered Daybed

The Lana is rated at 500 pounds, the highest top-bed figure here alongside the full-size Harlow, and it takes either a twin or a full mattress. The twin measures 88 inches wide, 46 inches deep and 41.5 inches high, with a back panel 33.5 inches tall, in solid and engineered wood with upholstery and metal legs on a platform frame. There is no trundle.

It is the easiest arrival of the group. West Elm's White Glove Service delivers it assembled and takes the packaging away, which matters if nobody in the house wants to build furniture. Because it comes in built, measure the doorways and the turns into the room as well as the wall. The 88-inch width is the widest here, a little over 7 feet.

Ask West Elm for the current price, the warranty term and the thickest mattress the frame takes, and check whether your finish counts as made to order, because West Elm's returns page excludes made-to-order furniture from its 30-day return window.

If two adults will stay at once, I would shortlist from the rows where both numbers suit both guests: the ZINUS at 350 and 350, the Walker Edison at 300 and 300, or the Harlow with its 500-pound trundle. The HEMNES can join that list once IKEA gives you a figure.

A daybed with its pop-up trundle drawn out and raised on its folding legs until its mattress sits level with the daybed's own mattress, the two lying edge to edge as one wide sleeping surface, photographed from standing height at a front three-quarter angle
A pop-up trundle rises to the height of the top bed, so two twins become one wide surface.

Pop-up or roll-out: choosing the trundle

A roll-out trundle stays low, near the floor, and usually takes a thinner mattress. A pop-up trundle rolls out and then lifts its mattress to the height of the daybed, so the two beds sit level and can be pushed together. Every trundle among the picks rolls out; pop-up models are worth knowing about if your guests are a couple.

Owners describe both uses. On a Walmart listing for a Fashion Bed Group daybed with a pop-up trundle, one owner said it could be set up as two twin beds or as one larger shared surface, and another said the mattress fit on the pop-up frame and the hard part was carrying the heavy frame upstairs. Reviewers of the Wade Logan Beant daybed at Wayfair described the same two-twins-or-one-bed setup, while others found assembly slow and physically demanding. An Overstock reviewer of the Somette Boho daybed said children could pull out and raise the pop-up easily, and another reported the trundle legs broke after the fifth use. These are single accounts, so read them as things to ask about rather than verdicts.

How often the trundle will be slept on matters too. Jeremy Klein of Sleep Foundation writes that trundle beds are "not typically designed for everyday use," and Sleep Foundation's trundle bed guide explains that the thinner trundle mattresses wear faster and the repeated sliding speeds up wear. For a trundle a child sleeps on every night, the mattress is the part to budget for.

An extremely close view from above of two flat wooden daybed slats running across the frame with the even gap between them in the middle of the picture, and through that gap the plain metal center support rail and one of its short feet visible below, standing on bare floorboards
Slat spacing decides how well the mattress is held. Ask for it when a listing leaves it out.

Checks for any daybed listing

Whatever you shortlist, these are the figures to have in writing before you pay.

The weight limit for each surface. Read the top bed and the trundle separately; the Manila's 400 and 225 show how far apart they can be. If a listing gives one number, ask which surface it covers, and if it gives none, as with the IKEA daybeds, ask the seller.

The mattress size and thickness. A daybed takes a twin on top, but the trundle may have its own limit, 6 inches on the Penny and 8 on the Walker Edison. On a frame with a side rail and a back, a thick mattress sits higher against both. Neither IKEA nor Pottery Barn Kids gives a mattress height that keeps the back comfortable for sitting, so compare the rail and back heights with the mattress you plan to use.

The clearance under the frame. The trundle, with its mattress, has to slide under the daybed. The Harlow publishes 10 inches of clearance over an 8-inch trundle; for other frames, ask for the height from the floor to the underside of the rails and compare it with the trundle's platform height plus its mattress, with a little room left for bedding.

Slat spacing and support. None of the seven daybeds gives the distance between slats, and only the Penny gives a count. Ask the seller for both, and ask whether the frame needs a box spring; the ZINUS, Harlow, Penny and Walker Edison say it does not.

Foam claims. If a daybed or its mattress includes foam, CertiPUR-US certification covers the flexible polyurethane foam rather than the furniture as a whole, according to the program's own FAQ, and you can look a maker up in the CertiPUR-US directory. Coley Home, for example, states that all the foam in its daybed is CertiPUR-US certified and that the piece meets TB117-2013.

A close side view at mattress height of one end of a plain metal daybed, framed so the top of the end arm rises only a short way above the surface of the thick mattress lying against it, the narrow band of rail left showing above the mattress being the plain subject
A thicker mattress sits higher against the ends and back, so check the maker's mattress limit.

What to confirm for a child's room

For a child, ask the maker three things: the minimum age, the minimum mattress height, and whether a guardrail can be fitted. Pottery Barn Kids recommends a top mattress of at least 9 inches on both the Harlow and the Penny, and says a guardrail cannot be used on the Harlow because of its slat design. DHP's manual for its Franklin Mid-Century Daybed says the bed is not intended for children under 4 and warns against jumping and horseplay.

If you are looking for a federal slat-spacing figure, the CPSC's bunk bed requirements cover beds whose foundation underside sits more than 30 inches above the floor, and ASTM's voluntary bunk bed standard, F1427, uses the same 30-inch line. A daybed platform like the Penny's, at 13 inches, is well below it, so for a daybed the maker's own age, mattress and guardrail guidance is the guidance to follow.

A wooden daybed part way through flat-pack assembly in an empty daylit room, its two end panels and its back panel standing bolted together into an open frame, with the loose slats stacked squarely in a neat pile on the floor beside it and one plain L-shaped hex key set down at rest on top of the stack
Read the return terms before you build the frame, while it is still in its boxes.

Returns, before a frame is built

A daybed is heavy, and returning one after assembly is work, so read the policy before you open the boxes. IKEA takes new, unopened products back within 365 days and opened products within 180 days with proof of purchase. Pottery Barn Kids allows 30 days on eligible items and may deduct shipping from the refund. West Elm allows 30 days, excludes made-to-order furniture, arranges furniture returns by phone, and may charge return shipping and processing depending on the reason. Walmart's standard return policy gives 90 days on most purchases and 30 for marketplace sellers, and assembled furniture has to be fully taken apart and repacked before it goes back to a store or a FedEx location.

Pick the right daybed

1. Two adults will sleep over at once. Which pair of figures should you check first?

2. The DHP Manila rates its daybed at 400 pounds and its trundle at 225. Who is the trundle better suited to?

3. IKEA recommends mattresses no thicker than 5 1/2 inches for the HEMNES. What should you do before buying a thicker guest mattress?

4. A listing gives no clearance under the frame. What do you ask for?

Pick an answer to begin.

Frequently asked questions

Can an adult sleep on a daybed every night?

Start with the top bed's weight limit against the sleeper, 500 pounds on the Lana and 350 on the ZINUS, and put a proper twin mattress on it. Trundles are a different matter: Sleep Foundation describes them as better for occasional guests because their thinner mattresses wear faster.

What size mattress does a daybed take?

A twin, on every pick here, with the West Elm Lana also taking a full. Check the thickness separately: IKEA recommends 5 1/2 inches or less, while Pottery Barn Kids recommends at least 9 inches on top for its children's daybeds.

How much weight can a daybed hold?

It depends on the model and the surface. Among these picks the top bed runs from 300 pounds on the Walker Edison, Penny and twin Harlow to 500 on the Lana, and the trundle from 225 pounds on the DHP Manila to 500 on the Harlow; IKEA's daybeds give no bed figure, so ask.

Does a daybed need a box spring?

The ZINUS Suzanne, the Pottery Barn Kids Harlow and Penny, and the Walker Edison corduroy daybed all say no box spring is required, and the HEMNES comes with a slatted base. If a listing does not say, ask the seller before you order a mattress.

Can I add a trundle later?

On some designs. Pottery Barn Kids sells a Penny trundle on its own for $499 to $549 as of September 2026, while the HEMNES has its pull-out base built in and the Lana has no trundle option.
