A power recliner is worth the extra money when pressing a button is easier or safer for the person in the chair, and a manual is the simpler chair when they can work a pull tab and would rather have no cord. On Ashley's Stoneland recliner, which is sold in both versions on one site, that choice costs $100: the manual is $449.99 and the power chair is $549.99 on ashleyfurniture.com as of September 2026. The bigger differences sit in the warranty, the repair bill and what the chair does when the power goes out.

### Key Takeaways

#### The motor is the shorter warranty

La-Z-Boy covers reclining-mechanism parts for life but electrical parts and motors for 3 years; Ashley covers recliner mechanisms for 5 years.

#### One model, one gap

Ashley's Stoneland is $449.99 manual and $549.99 power, a $100 difference.

#### Repairs are priced by part

One South Florida repairer lists $190 to $360 for an actuator or lift motor and $140 to $320 for a manual mechanism.

#### Power needs a plug or a pack

Ashley lists a 120-inch cord on the Stoneland power chair; Monte's Cortina motorized glider runs on an included rechargeable battery.

#### The outage backup is small

La-Z-Boy's two 9-volt batteries are meant to return the chair upright, and the maker does not guarantee how many times they will.

#### A power recliner is not a lift chair

Only a lift chair raises the seat toward standing, and Medicare's rule covers that mechanism, not a comfort recliner.

## What does the motor add to the price?

On the one model where both versions are on one maker's site, it adds $100. Ashley sells the [Stoneland Manual Rocker Recliner](https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/stoneland_recliner/3990525.html), item 3990525, at $449.99, and the [Stoneland Power Recliner](https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/stoneland_power_recliner/3990598.html?cgid=recliners&ttdeeplink=reviews), item 3990598, at a sale price of $549.99, both as of September 2026. The two have different item numbers, so ask the seller to confirm the frame and cushions are the same before you treat the $100 as the cost of the motor alone.

Other pairs show how fast a price gap can grow once the fabric and the seller change. Flexsteel's Catalina manual recliner (SKU 2900-50) was $1,287 at [Atlantic Fine Furniture](https://atlanticfinefurniture.com/products/catalina-manual-recliner) as of September 2026, while the Catalina power recliner (SKU S3900-50M) is $2,730 in the leather-match grade on [Flexsteel's July 2026 price list](https://files.steinhafels.com/vendors/FLXD/CATAL/PriceList.pdf). That $1,443 difference compares two sellers and two upholstery grades, so it overstates what the motor costs. La-Z-Boy's [April 2024 price list for the James](https://files.steinhafels.com/vendors/LAZB/JAMES/PriceList.pdf) shows another line item: an optional $188 battery pack on styles with one power supply. The current [James Power Rocking Recliner with Headrest and Lumbar](https://www.la-z-boy.com/p/living-room/recliners/rocking-recliners/james-power-rocking-recliner-w-headrest-lumbar/R-10X521) lists at $2,689.

To compare a manual and a power chair fairly, match the fabric or leather, the base, whether the power version adds a headrest or lumbar, the seller and any promotion, then add the battery pack if you want one. [PlushPick's guide to what a recliner costs](https://plushpick.com/blog/how-much-does-a-recliner-cost/) puts the whole price range in one place.

## Which lasts longer, and what does each warranty cover?

No maker or repair service publishes an average lifespan for either kind, so a warranty is the clearest written commitment you can compare. It tells you which parts the maker will stand behind and for how long. It does not predict how long the chair will last.

The pattern is the same at the three makers whose terms are published: the mechanism that moves every time you recline is covered longest, and the electrical parts are covered for less. [La-Z-Boy](https://www.la-z-boy.com/content/CustomerCare/parts-warranty/) covers reclining-mechanism parts for the life of the product, electrical parts and motors for 3 years, and battery packs for 1 year, with 1 year of labor. [Ashley](https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/warranty-information) lists a 5-year limited warranty on recliner mechanisms and 3 years on power foundation mechanisms and electrical components, each with 1 year of labor, so the electrical term is 2 years shorter. [Flexsteel](https://www.flexsteel.com/pages/warranty) gives its reclining mechanism a lifetime limited warranty, and after the first year the buyer pays labor and shipping on a repair. Flexsteel treats electrical and mechanical components as separate categories and its [FAQ](https://www.flexsteel.com/pages/faqs) points to the warranty tag for the exact terms, so read the tag on the model you are buying. On a lift chair, [Golden Technologies' Rhea PR442](https://goldentech.com/product/lift-recliners/rhea-/) lists a lifetime frame, 3 years on electrical parts, 1 year on electrical labor and 3 years on mechanical labor.

Warranty terms as the makers publish them

| Maker | Mechanism | Motor or electrical | Battery pack | Labor |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| La-Z-Boy | Lifetime (reclining-mechanism parts) | 3 years | 1 year | 1 year |
| Ashley | 5 years (recliner mechanisms) | 3 years (power foundation mechanism and electrical components) | Not listed | 1 year |
| Flexsteel | Lifetime limited (reclining mechanism) | Product-specific; read the tag | Not listed | After year one, buyer pays labor and shipping |
| Golden Technologies Rhea (lift chair) | Lifetime frame; 3 years mechanical labor | 3 years electrical parts; 1 year electrical labor | Not listed | See left |

That makes the most durable brand a question about coverage rather than a ranking. A lifetime mechanism warranty in year three still leaves you paying for the repairer's time, so ask who does the work and where the parts come from. For the same reason, an electrical term shorter than the mechanism term is the line to read twice before paying for a power version.

## What breaks, and what does a repair cost?

The motor and its parts are where a power recliner picks up problems a manual does not. [Berne Repair](https://bernerepair.com/recliner-repair), a repair service in South Florida, lists these power-chair faults along with the part it usually points to:

- No movement at all, often a transformer, an unplugged or damaged cable, a dead hand control or a wiring fault.
- A motor that hums or clicks without moving the chair, usually an actuator, a stripped gearset or a seized mechanism.
- Movement in one direction only, or stopping partway, tied to an actuator, a limit switch or a control board.
- Dead or intermittent hand controls, from cracked controls, connector pins or ribbon cables.
- Clunking, grinding or wobble from side to side, from worn cables, bent mechanisms, loose bolts or cracked welds. This one also happens on a manual.
- A dead USB port or cup-holder light, from an accessory transformer, harness or USB module.

A manual recliner skips the electrical chain but still has handles, cables, springs, linkages and pivots, and Berne lists mechanism, cable and linkage repair for mechanical recliners too. Its residential price ranges, parts and labor, with a $59 diagnostic visit credited toward an approved repair, run:

| Repair | Berne Repair price range | |---|---| | Power supply or transformer | $110 to $190 | | Hand control or wiring harness | $120 to $210 | | Actuator or lift motor | $190 to $360 | | Multi-motor control board | $200 to $380 | | Manual mechanism, cable or linkage | $140 to $320 |

These are one repairer's South Florida prices and the final figure is confirmed in writing after diagnosis, so use them as a sense of scale. A manual mechanism repair can cost nearly as much as a motor repair, which means the motor does not make every repair dearer. It adds a set of extra parts that can need one.

## How much effort does each way of opening take?

A lever or pull tab takes enough grip to pull the release and enough leg or body control to close the footrest. A push-back chair takes a lean or push with the upper body. A power button takes almost no effort and needs electricity. None of the consumer models here publishes a force figure in pounds, so if strength is the reason you are comparing, try the mechanism in person or ask the seller for the maker's operating instructions.

Space is published, and it varies by model. Ashley's Stoneland manual needs 12 inches from the wall and reclines to 68 inches long, its [Tarrant manual recliner](https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/tarrant_recliner/9140525.html?dwvar_9140525-Master_color=Mocha) needs 13 inches and reclines to 63, and the [Fairfield Loft push-back recliner](https://www.fairfieldchair.com/Product/All-Product/Upholstery/Recliners/Recliner/Detail/Loft-Manual-Push-Back-Recliner/462C-MR) needs 12 inches and reclines to 65. [La-Z-Boy's general placement guidance](https://www.la-z-boy.com/productassets/productmanuals/93000287_General_Operating_Instructions.pdf) is at least 2 inches between the reclined back and the wall, and it adds that a particular product can need more. [PlushPick's explanation of recliner types](https://plushpick.com/blog/types-of-recliners/) covers why the type name never gives the clearance. I'd say a power chair earns its price fastest for someone who finds a lever or a push-back hard work. Since I've had back pain since I was 18, being able to stop a chair at the angle that feels right is the feature I'd weigh most, but it is a feature, and only you can say whether it is worth a shorter electrical warranty.

## Does a power recliner have to be plugged in?

Yes, unless the chair comes with a rechargeable pack built for that model. The published details differ by maker:

- **La-Z-Boy:** a [120-volt power cord](https://content.la-z-boy.com/productassets/productmanuals/93000536-00-12-12.pdf) into a wall outlet. The power transformer takes two 9-volt alkaline batteries for emergency backup only.
- **Ashley Stoneland power:** a 120-inch, UL-listed power cord.
- **Monte Cortina motorized glider:** an [included rechargeable battery](https://montedesign.com/products/motorized-cortina-glider-recliner). Monte says an 8-hour charge gives months of use and does not publish a cycle count.
- **Pride:** [lithium battery backup](https://www.pridemobility.com/pride-power-lift-recliners/lift-recliner-accessories/lithium-battery-backup.asp) is optional on its Infinity, Oasis and Heritage collections, and its VivaLift power recliners include it.
- **Battery pack makers:** [Raffel's TRU pack](https://www.raffel.com/products/battery-packs/) is 2,000 mAh with 50-plus cycles, depending on configuration, load and use. [Enouvation](https://www.enouvation.com/) rates its packs for up to 800, 1,200 or 2,000 motorized functions depending on the model.

The power-cut behavior is where the chairs really differ. La-Z-Boy's built-in backup is meant to bring a reclined chair upright and closed so you can get out; the maker's instructions say it should work the chair two times under normal conditions and that performance is not guaranteed. Continued use needs a separate battery pack. A manual chair simply keeps working, because it has nothing electrical in it.

Before you order a power chair, ask the seller four things: whether the exact model returns upright on backup power, whether a pack is included or sold separately, how many recline cycles the maker specifies, and where the cord will run. La-Z-Boy's safety manual also says not to place the power supply under the chair, not to pinch the cord and not to use a damaged cord, plug or power supply.

## Are electric recliners dangerous?

They have electrical, moving-part and cord hazards, and how much that matters depends on the specific design and its condition. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall on April 2, 2020 of [Southern Motion Wireless Power reclining furniture](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2020/Southern-Motion-Recalls-Wireless-Power-Reclining-Furniture-Due-to-Fire-Hazard) because its lithium-ion batteries could overheat and cause a fire. CPSC reported six overheating incidents involving chairs and floor coverings and no injuries. That recall covered one maker's wireless battery system, not recliners in general, but it is the reason to look for a recall notice on any chair that uses a battery pack.

For households with children or pets, the makers' instructions are the practical guide. [La-Z-Boy's safety manual](https://content.la-z-boy.com/productassets/productmanuals/DOC013834_2.pdf) says to keep children and pets away from openings and moving parts, keep cords away from heat and away from where people walk, and not to use damaged cords or power supplies. [Flexsteel](https://www.flexsteel.com/pages/warranty) recommends leaving unoccupied reclining furniture closed and upright to protect children and pets. That advice applies to manual recliners too, since the footrest and the gaps around it move on both kinds.

## Which one suits a nursery?

A manual glider has no motor and no cord, which is the simplest setup for a room where a baby sleeps. A power glider takes less effort to recline and has a quiet electronic control, and it adds a cord or battery and powered moving parts. Two makers sell both versions of the same chair, which makes the choice easy to compare:

The Kiwi's electronic version weighs 123.2 pounds assembled, and Babyletto describes both its manual and electronic mechanisms as quiet. Monte offers the Cortina as a manual version, which uses a hidden handle and upper-body pressure, and as a motorized one with a button on the arm; both sit 12 to 14 inches from the wall. Monte also says the Cortina stops gliding once it is reclined and that the gliding does not lock. No maker lists a noise level in decibels for these chairs, so if a quiet motor matters, ask for the model's noise specification and plan where the cord runs and where the reclined footrest will end.

## Which one helps an older parent stand, and when is it a lift chair?

A power recliner moves the back and the footrest. It does not raise the seat. A lift chair adds a lifting seat that tilts and raises the person toward standing, and that is the chair to look at when getting up is the problem. [La-Z-Boy's PowerLift recliners](https://content.la-z-boy.com/productassets/productconfigurations/tearpads/tearpad-lift.pdf) combine sitting, reclining and standing assistance, with lift capacities of 300 pounds in the Bronze series, 350 in Platinum and 500 in Gold. [Pride's LC-105 Essential](https://www.pridemobility.com/pride-power-lift-recliners/essential-lc-105/) has upright, standing and fully reclined positions, a 325-pound capacity, a 9-foot cord and a 9-volt battery backup. For a comparison point, the Golden Technologies Rhea PR442 publishes a 400-pound capacity, a 37-inch overall width and a 45-inch overall height. [PlushPick's lift chair guide](https://plushpick.com/guides/best-lift-chair/) covers seat height, motors, battery backup and fitting the chair to the person.

Medicare's rule is narrow. Under the [CMS coverage determination for seat-lift mechanisms](https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/lcd.aspx?lcdId=33801&ver=26), the mechanism has to be prescribed as part of treatment for severe hip or knee arthritis or a severe neuromuscular disease, the person must be completely unable to stand from a regular armchair, and they must be able to walk once standing. [Medicare.gov](https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/durable-medical-equipment-dme-coverage) adds that covered equipment has to be medically necessary and ordered for use at home. That is not coverage for a comfort recliner, power or manual. Consumer Reports' visible [lift chair page](https://www.consumerreports.org/health/lift-chairs/best-lift-chairs-a5190452595/) says the chairs it tested had weight limits from 300 to 450 pounds and that lift height, speed, comfort, adjustability and fit all matter; its detailed ratings are not visible without access.

## What if the user is heavier?

The chair's published capacity governs, and a motor is not rated separately unless the maker says it is. La-Z-Boy's power rocking and power wall recliner instructions give a maximum of 300 pounds per seat. Among other published figures, the [GarveeLife extra-large manual recliner](https://www.lowes.com/pd/GarveeLife-Extra-Large-PU-Leather-Recliner-Manual-Reclining-Chair-Black/9074640) lists 400 pounds, and the Golden Rhea lift recliner lists 400. The Flexsteel Catalina manual rocker recliner shows two figures on one [retailer listing](https://www.nfm.com/flexsteel-catalina-manual-rocker-recliner-in-gray-45713658/45713658.html): 400 pounds in the description and 300 in the specifications, so go by 300 until the seller confirms the other in writing. [Leggett & Platt's 400ez mechanism](https://lphomefurniture.com/recliner-and-motion-furniture/metal-to-the-floor/400ez) is tested at 400 pounds and comes in manual and power versions, so ask which mechanism is inside the chair you are considering. For a lift chair, the stated capacity applies to the whole lift-and-recline system. [PlushPick's recliner guide](https://plushpick.com/guides/best-recliner/) has a section on taller and heavier users, and its "Power, manual and the plug" section works through the same choice across six named chairs.

**Quiz: Which recliner fits the situation?**

1. A power recliner's motor is covered for 3 years and its mechanism for life. What does the lifetime term still leave you paying?
   - Nothing, a lifetime term covers everything
   - The repairer's labor after the first year, in the makers listed here **(correct answer)**
   - Only the battery pack
2. A parent has trouble standing up from a chair. What does a power recliner do about that?
   - It lifts the seat toward standing
   - It moves the back and footrest; a lift chair is the one that raises the seat **(correct answer)**
   - It qualifies for Medicare automatically
3. A listing shows a 400-pound capacity in the description and 300 in the specifications. Which figure do you plan around?
   - The higher one
   - The lower one, until the seller confirms the other in writing **(correct answer)**
   - The average of the two
4. The power goes out while a La-Z-Boy power recliner is fully reclined. What is the built-in emergency backup meant to do?
   - Run the chair as usual for hours
   - Bring the chair upright and closed so you can get out **(correct answer)**
   - Lock the chair in position

## Frequently asked questions

**Which lasts longer, a manual or power recliner?**

No maker or repair service publishes a lifespan figure for either kind, so the comparable evidence is the warranty. At La-Z-Boy the reclining mechanism is covered for life and the electrical parts and motors for 3 years, and at Ashley the mechanism is covered for 5 years and the electrical parts for 3. Those are coverage periods, not predictions of how long a chair will run.

**What are the disadvantages of power recliners?**

They cost more, they need an outlet or a battery pack, and they add parts that can fail. Berne Repair's list includes the power supply, hand control, wiring harness, actuator and control board. Their electrical warranty is also shorter than the mechanism warranty at the makers that publish both.

**Which brand of recliner is the most durable?**

Warranty length cannot rank brands on durability. What it can do is show you which parts each maker covers and for how long, so compare the mechanism term, the electrical term and the labor period on the exact model, and ask whether replacement parts stay available.

**What type of recliner is best for the elderly, and will Medicare pay?**

A lift chair is the type built to help someone stand, and a power recliner is easier on the hands than a lever but does not raise the seat. Medicare covers a seat-lift mechanism only when its conditions are met, including a prescription, and it does not cover a comfort recliner.

**Is a manual or power recliner better for a nursery?**

A manual glider has no motor or cord to manage, and a power version trades that for button control. Both kinds of Babyletto Kiwi are the same size and list the same 300-pound capacity, so the decision comes down to whether you want a cord or a battery in the room.

### The words on a power recliner listing

Tap a term to see what it means.

**Actuator.** The motor-driven part that pushes the back and footrest through their travel. Berne Repair prices an actuator or lift motor repair at $190 to $360.

**Transformer.** The box that steps wall current down to what the chair's motor uses. La-Z-Boy's holds the two 9-volt batteries for emergency backup.

**Emergency backup.** A small battery in the power supply meant to bring a reclined chair upright after an outage, not to run the chair as usual.

**Battery pack.** A rechargeable unit that lets a power chair move without a wall outlet. Makers list it as included, optional or a separate purchase.

**Limited warranty.** Coverage with conditions, often parts only after the first year, so labor and shipping fall to the buyer.

**Seat-lift mechanism.** The part of a lift chair that raises and tilts the seat, which is the item Medicare's coverage rule addresses.

If the choice has come down to a lift chair, [PlushPick](https://plushpick.com/) has [a guide to the best lift chairs](https://plushpick.com/guides/best-lift-chair/) with seat heights, battery backup and what Medicare requires.
